Rights of the Child Booklet

1. WHO IS A CHILD?

A child is any person below 18 years old. It also includes a person who is born outside marriage and a child who has been adopted.

2. WHAT IS A RIGHT?

A right is something that a person is allowed by the law to have, do or enjoy. A right is protected by the law and no person is allowed to take away another person's rights.

3. WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS?

Human rights are benefits that every person is born with. They belong to both adults and children. In addition, human rights are the same for girls and boys. The following are the characteristics of human rights.

4. CHILD RIGHTS PRINCIPLES

There are four most important principles that apply to all children. These are:

i. Principle of Non-discrimination;

ii. Principle of the Best Interests of the Child;

iii. Principle of Life, Survival and Development; and

iv. Respect for views of the child.

When making decisions on matters affecting children, the best interest of the child should be considered first.

5. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RIGHTS THAT CHILDREN HAVE?

Human rights are for human beings, children are people too, and therefore, children have rights just like adults.
